Stepan L. Shvartsev (DOB Sept. 14, 1936, Lithuania) – Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Hydrogeoecology, Chief Research Worker at the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics of the SB RAS, the USSR State Prize winner.

Biography

1960 - Graduated with honours from Tomsk Polytechnic Institute (TPI).

1960 - Work in Ob-Irtish research expedition organized by Siberian Research Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineral Resources.

1964 - Associate Professor at TPI.

1964 - Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences (PhD).

1966-1968 - Visiting lecturer at the Polytechnical Institute of Conakry (Guinea).

1980 - Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences.

1980-1990 - Dean of the Faculty of Geological Survey.

1982 - Professor at TPI.

1994 - Head of Tomsk division of The United Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy.

1997 - present - Director of Tomsk Branch of the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology SB RAS.

Research Interests

- Ground water geochemistry;

- Search and exploration of geo assets.

Research Achievements

Stepan Shvartsev developed the theory and practice of application of hydrogeochemical technique to search for ore mineral resources fields in permafrost zone, as well as a new scientific direction in the field of water-rock interaction. He elaborated the modern concept of ground water structure formation. The recent years Shvartsev has been intensively developing a new scientific field «Geological evolution and self-organization of the water–rock system».

Publications

Professor Shvartsev is an author of more than 560 research papers, including 20 monographs, 2 manuals and 6 teaching aids. More than 100 research papers were published in English. He was a thesis advisor of 49 candidates and 9 doctors of science.
